Automotive Technician students pass industry certs

Today's auto repair shop isn't just tools, car parts and grease. Automotive Technicians are also experts in modern technology. That's where the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests come in.

The exams are written to measure the knowledge of diagnostic and repair skills necessary for competent job performance. Experienced professionals who work daily on vehicle systems know these test questions pertain to everyday work in the shop.

A panel of technical service experts from vehicle manufacturers, repair and test equipment and parts manufacturers, working technicians and educators have written the test questions.

Eight students enrolled in the Automotive Technology program have passed one or more ASE Industry certifications.

Sheet Metal students get boost from Foundation scholarships

Because of scholarships from the Bates Foundation, three students in Sheet Metal Technology will save about $500 on expensive tools and a welding hood required for the program and used as they enter industry.
 

Jonny Fries, a single parent with two daughters ages five and seven, received the Dayton E. Finnegan scholarship, Technical High School student Chris Koenig was awarded the Jim Wilson (Lakewood First Lions Club) scholarship, and Beau Cruz, also a Technical High School student, received the Guy and Nancy Hamilton scholarship.   

Students who complete all required elements of the Sheet Metal Technology program will be awarded direct entry into the Western Washington Sheet Metal JATC Local 66 building trades apprenticeship program, where they can look forward to enjoying these wages.

KBTC reels in another Emmy Award

For the fourth consecutive year, KBTC has won an Emmy Award for an episode in the documentary series Full Focus.

Representatives from KBTC accepted their statuette at the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awards ceremony on Saturday, June 11 in Snoqualmie.

Winning in the category of Interview/Discussion-Program/Special, “Portraits of Fallen Heroes” is a half-hour documentary that features Michael Reagan, a professional artist for more than 40 years. Known for his vivid etchings of politicians, celebrities and athletes, Reagan draws exclusively service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. To date, he has sketched more than 2,400 portraits free of charge for the families of fallen soldiers.

“We are thrilled to, once again, have been recognized for the work we do telling the stories of Western Washington,” said KBTC Executive Director and General Manager David Hinman. “This accomplishment shows KBTC’s dedication to serving our communities.”

Considered the industry’s most prestigious and highest honor, the Emmy Award recognizes excellence in television programming. KBTC has won eight Emmy Awards and has garnered 23 Emmy nominations since 2007.

South Campus Library to adjust hours

With Mary Moseley, library technician, leaving at the end of this month, and Jennie Vano, librarian, voluntarily cutting back to half time, the South Campus Library, SC E201, will adjust its open hours.

Please feel free to stop by and say farewell to Mary, check in with Jennie, or share any comments or ideas you may have as we decide upon a schedule for July and the next school year.

Board of Trustees to hold meeting June 23, 3 p.m.

The regular Board of Trustees meeting for this month is scheduled for Tuesday, June 28, but the college does not anticipate having a quorum present. In light of that and to address any necessary business, the Board of Trustees will conduct a special board meeting at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 in the Clyde Hupp Board Room, Downtown Campus.  All interested students, employees and community members are invited to attend this meeting.

Diversity Workshops at the Downtown Campus

Dr. Leticia Nieto will conduct two anti-oppression workshops at the Downtown Campus on Wednesday, June 29.

The sessions are free to students, staff and community guests. If you're interested in attending one or more sessions, please contact Kat Flores, x7178 as soon as possible. The number of participants is limited, and space is available on a first come, first served basis.

Beyond Inclusion: Strategic Interventions for Anti-Oppression
This four-hour session is an abbreviated version of Dr. Nieto’s longer workshops but does follow the general outcomes: to facilitate communication and empowerment. It focuses on clarifying the complexities of working across significant differences and understanding the dynamics of oppression. The training often results in participants taking on action plans to bring about positive change. To increase the effectiveness of the session, all participants will be expected to read the three-article series on anti-oppression, “ASK LETICIA,” on Dr. Nieto’s website at http://cuetzpalin.com/Cuetzpalin/welcome.html.

Understanding the Dynamics of Oppression
This two-hour overview touches on the key elements of oppression. It is an introductory version of the longer morning session. Students can benefit from either session, but may be more likely to attend a two-hour (compared to four-hour) workshop. No pre-reading assignment is required.

Campus Emergencies: When you dial 9-1-1, also dial x7000

When you dial  9-1-1 from any Bates campus during an emergency, please also call the main college reception line x7000 (253.680.7000), and report that you called 9-1-1. Tell the receptionist where the emergency is located, and if you are unable to do so, please ask someone else to do it.

When someone calls 9-1-1 for college-related emergencies, the 9-1-1 operator will call the college’s main line (x7000) to verify the emergency and to find out exactly where to send the first responders. In the past when someone at the college has called 9-1-1, the receptionist was not aware of an emergency or where to direct emergency personnel. Please help us avoid this scenario.

Also, please remember to stand out by the road to wave in emergency vehicles so they can see exactly where the emergency is. That way, emergency personnel won't waste valuable time driving around campus in an effort to locate the emergency.
